Breaking rules and making memories on the island of Santorini!

My trip to Santorini was like a wild ride filled with fun and a little bit of mischief.I had spent six months on Zakynthos, then went to Corfu for ten days. After that, I visited Athens for five days before taking a flight to Crete. I was island-hopping in Greece, and my next exciting stop was the stunning Santorini. 

Let’s see what ‘the Island’ has to offer. 

I arrived by ferry, a quick two-hour journey from Crete, and was instantly captivated by the stunning view of the island. With no plans, I hopped on a bus to dive into the adventure headfirst. I managed to find a simple room for my two nights through booking in the capital of the Island Fira, and then set off to explore the city. 

My wanderings led me to the V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar. The owner who also owned the hotel below this lounge(Panaroma suites), a UK native with a deep connection to Greece, was incredibly welcoming (Greek dad, UK mother). Over a few beers, we chatted about life, the island, and my travels. Despite my tight budget, he kindly offered me a deal to stay in the master suite for one night – a birthday treat on the 25 of October. I couldn’t refuse! It was a room with a view that was out of this world, it had a Jacuzzi overlooking the Caldera and normally you see this only on Instagram pages, now I am experiencing it and I like it;). I will come back in 2 to use to amazing offer.

In Oia drones are not allowed.

On the second day, I decided to visit Oia, a beautiful place in Santorini known for its amazing sunsets and charming buildings. There were clear signs everywhere saying “No Drone Flying,” but I couldn’t resist the urge. I sent my drone up into the sky to get a cool view of Oia from above. Looking back, I know it wasn’t the best choice, but I really wanted to see Oia from a different angle.
I could tell that some of the local people were watching me, but they didn’t say anything.

It was different from the busy summers they were used to. This year, the island was much quieter, and the locals seemed to be enjoying the peace and calmness.My drone could not ruin there mood, this was defiantly different with a local guy in Tenerife in 2022 but that is a whole other story. 

Exploring the Other Side of Santorini: Kamari, Perissa, and the Majestic Red Beach

I had already spent two amazing days walking around Oia and Fira. Now, it was time to see what else Santorini had to offer. I decided to go to Kamari, Perissa, and the famous Red Beach.

Kamari – A Big Climb

In Kamari, I wanted to see the city from high up, so I went on a hike. The path was steep and a bit hard. I’m not great with heights and had to count till 10 a few times. But when I got to the top, wow! The view was worth it. I could see the whole city and the sea. It was so beautiful and made me feel really happy.

The Red Beach – So Different

Next, I went to the Red Beach. The way to get there was a bit rocky, but when I saw the beach, I was amazed. The red rocks and the blue sea looked so strange and wonderful, like a picture from a storybook. It was a really special place, different from any beach I’d seen before.

Perissa – A Beach with Lots of Bars

Then I went to Perissa. This place is famous for its beach bars. There are about 40 of them, one after the other. I was there when the holiday season was over, so it was quiet. But I could imagine that in the summer, it’s full of people having fun, dancing, and enjoying the sun. It must be like a big beach party!

This part of my trip showed me that Santorini has so many different things to see and do. It’s not just the famous spots like Oia and Fira. Whether you like quiet nature walks, cool beaches, or fun parties, there’s something for everyone.

Party for my 30th birthday.

Back to my amazing offer a got from the owner of Panaroma suites. Two nights in a cozy double room and one night in a fantastic master villa, all thanks to my new friend, the bar/hotel owner. It was such a generous gesture.

On the 25th of October, I decided to throw a small party in the villa’s jacuzzi with some of the friends I had made on the island. We were having a great time, and our laughter and excitement got a little too loud. Eventually, a hotel staff member had to come and ask us to quiet down.

Looking back, I wish I had been more considerate, especially after the kindness I had received. It wasn’t my last night on the island, but it was a lesson in appreciating the generosity of others and being mindful of the peace and quiet of the surroundings.

 

In memomarium: The summer of 2020. 

Despite the challenges of the summer of 2020 due to COVID-19, I had a chance to visit Greece. And what made it even more special was reuniting with my love, Sarah, on the lovely island of Crete. It truly became the most amazing summer for me, filled with love, adventure, and unforgettable moments.

A Trip to Flores: From the Netherlands to Paradise

Ever wanted to visit a hidden gem? That’s what Flores in the Azores felt like for me. My trip began with a flight from the Netherlands to Porto in Portugal. But here’s a cool travel tip: if you fly to Porto first, SATA airlines will give you a free ticket to the Azores! So, with my savings, I set off for Flores.

Terceira – Flores – Heaven. 

My first stop was Terceira, another island in the Azores. After that short visit, I landed in Santa Cruz das Flores. It’s a lovely town by the sea. I stayed there for a night to rest up from all the travel.

Waterfalls at Poço Ribeira do Ferreiro.

The next part of my trip was my main goal: the waterfalls near a place called Fajã Grande. I had a nice room booked at a bed and breakfast there. Fajã Grande is a calm village right by the ocean. On the night I arrived, it rained a bit. I was hungry and went to the only place open, a cozy spot called Barraca Q’abana. They had good food and really tasty sweet wine.

The big highlight of the trip was the next day. I went with a local guide to see the waterfalls at Poço Ribeira do Ferreiro. Wow! It was the prettiest place I’ve ever seen. Water was falling everywhere and everything was so green.

2 Days in heaven is to short, 5 days minimum

Sadly, I had only two days in Flores. But I loved every moment. The island is peaceful and beautiful. The ocean, the waterfalls, the food, and the friendly people made it special. I hope to go back and see more of it someday. If you’re thinking of a new place to visit, think about Flores. It’s worth it!

For anyone who loves a good adventure and beautiful sights, I highly recommend this trip. It’s a perfect mix of exciting activities and some of the most stunning natural beauty you’ll ever see. It’s truly an experience you won’t want to miss. I would recommend to the stopover on Ponta Delgada (Sao Miguel) instead of Terceira.

Exploring Caminito del Rey: Nature’s Beauty and Excitement

On August 27, we secured tickets for Caminito del Rey. After seeing stunning photos, our expectations were high. While it’s our human nature to have hopes, let’s see if they’re met.

Long ago, brave kids walked dangerous cliffs to school. Now, it’s our turn to walk Andalucia’s top, easy-to-walk scenic trail. Don’t miss it! 

Preparation is essential when planning hikes. 

Tickets for Caminito del Rey are limited daily. During our first week in Andalusia in early July, availability was tight and we missed out. However, we managed to secure tickets in July for a late August visit. It took some planning, but we found our slot.

The day prior, we reviewed all essentials for the trip. We booked our tickets through GetYourGuide and promptly received all necessary details, including the tickets. Here’s what to remember and what’s not allowed:

  • Passport or ID.
  • Sunglasses.
  • Sun hat.
  • Food and snacks.
  • Hiking shoes.
  • Water.
  • Small backpack.
  • Hiking gear.
Not allowed:
  • High heels.
  • Large bags.
  • Selfie sticks.
  • Walking sticks.
  • Open shoes.
  • Crutches.
  • No smoking.

Caminito del Rey: 7.7km of Breathtaking Scenic Adventure

Right from the start, this tour was thrilling. When we entered the valley, the high paths were a bit scary. But we got used to it fast, especially with the helpful staff around. Every part of the hike had someone from Caminito del Rey ready to assist, especially in scarier spots. I liked that everything looked new and well-cared for. I get nervous if I see old or rusty paths, so this made me feel safe.

The Caminito del Rey hike, from the northern entrance to the southern exit, is about 7.7 kilometers. About half of our Caminito del Rey journey was spent walking from the parking area to the entrance, and then from the exit to the shuttle bus. This part was nice, but the official section? Absolutely breathtaking! 

 

Caminito del Rey: Thrilling Heights and Impeccable Paths

This hike was amazing for both of us. Sarah has hiked in places like New Zealand, Australia, and Nepal, but she found this one the best. I felt the same way. The path was exciting from the start, and every turn made us want to see what was next. The valley hides the path ahead, which was cool. The brown rocks, running water, and animals were beautiful together. I’d tell everyone to try this hike. But if you’re scared of heights, it might be tough. I was a bit scared at first, but I got used to it after a while.

I won’t use many words because the pictures speak for themselves, right?

 

Parking challenges at Caminito del Rey. 

You have P, P1 and P2 (the names of the parkings on the website of El Caminito)

P1 Parking Guidance: P1 is situated at the trail’s start, offering various parking spots. Most visitors tend to park near the kiosk at the primary pedestrian entrance. This parking is costing 2€. However, we took a different approach: we drove up the hill just before or after (depending from which side you come) ‘El Mirador’ restaurant to join the trail from another direction. A word of caution – this route can be a bit tricky due to poor signage(see pictures below).

 

P Parking Guidance. P isn’t located at the beginning or end of the trail, making it less convenient. If you park here, you’ll need the shuttle bus both at the start and end of your hike. The main advantage of this parking is its ample space, ensuring you’ll find a spot. (and that is it for free)

P2 Parking Guidance: Situated near the town of El Chorro, P2 is the parking spot at the trail’s end. (the price for the parking area is 2€, but you can also find free parking spots along the road). If you opt for this, remember to take the bus to the hike’s starting point first. This bus journey lasts about 25 minutes. Tickets are available at the kiosk, (next to the busstop, and is costing 2,5€ per person, must be paid in cash). Be punctual, as the bus won’t wait! (and is only leaving every half an hour). (From where the bus will drop you, there is a 20 min. hike to the entrance, where you need to be at the time slot you have booked)

Our tour start at 09.20 so we had to be at P1 at 09.00, you will have to walk a little hike for about 20 min., that will lead you to the entrance, where you need to show your tickets, where there will be safety instructions and where you will be given a helmet. If you park your car at P make sure you are there at 08:30 and if you park it at P2 make sure you are there at 08.00.

Nearby the entrance, restrooms are available, but expect potential long lines. It’s wiser to find a restroom earlier on your route.

Two different way to the entrance:

1. The hike from the shuttlebusstop at P1 (same spot where the shuttle bus will drop you if you park by P2 or = parking), is going down the road, where the cars are driving. On your right hand you will find a little cave, with the sign “Caminito del Rey” – this Is where you must go in, and 20 min. later, you will find yourself at the entrance.

2. If you like us, park upstairs by the restaurant ‘El Mirador’, you need to walk up the hill, until you will find a little off-road on the right hand. This looks like, that you are not allowed to pass, since cars and more is not allowed. But this is actually the road to the entrance, and it will later emerge with the same route as from the shuttle bus stop. The hike will take you 20 min. till the entrance.)

 

Caminito del Rey Hike Review 9.5 out of 10

We loved the Caminito del Rey hike. The views were amazing and the paths were great. Our only small issue was the confusing parking signs. If those were clearer, we’d easily rate this a 10 out of 10. For now, it gets a strong 9.5. If you’re thinking of going, do it! Just watch out when parking.

2 days in Sevilla, Andalucia!

Discover Sevilla with Timo and Sarah. We spent 2 days exploring this sunny city, walking its historic streets. We found many interesting places and learned about its past. Join us to uncover more secrets and enjoy the lively atmosphere where old and new mix together.

Discovering Sevilla wasn’t hindered by the heat. 

We made a plan and got here, but the heat is stronger than we thought – around 42 degrees on average. We had to go slower. It’s hard because everything looks amazing and we want to see it all, Alcázar of Sevilla, Seville Cathedral and Plaza de España for example. We sensed the grandeur of Spain’s golden era in the city.

Explore the Old Town of Sevilla, where history comes alive on every street.

Sarah and I fell in love with Sevilla’s Old Town. Everything we wanted to see was so close and even more amazing in real life then on the pictures! Plaza de España showed us Spain’s beauty, while the Royal Alcázar felt like stepping back in time. The Cathedral of Sevilla was breathtaking, and the bullring, Plaza de Toros, was really interesting. We were surprised that all these cool places were so near each other. Pictures don’t always show how great things are, but here in Sevilla, real life is even better. We had a blast exploring, and everything was easy to walk to.

Near the Alcázar, we found cozy streets that made us feel at home. At the Seville Cathedral, we were amazed right away. Plaza de España was even cooler in person, and we loved the map-like tiles showing provinces and capitals. We laughed when we saw small Tapia on the list from the province Malaga – that’s where Sarah’s family has a summer house and friends.

Sevilla’s Old Town was like stepping into a storybook. Each place was like turning a page, full of history and fun.

Sevilla’s tapas tour: streets alive with flavor.

Evenings in Sevilla are magic, and we decided to do a self-guided tapas adventure. No fancy restaurants, just good drinks and tasty tapas. We wandered the lively streets, hopping from one cozy spot to another, savoring the local flavors. The city truly comes alive at night, and our tapas tour added a delightful twist to our Sevilla experience. 

We started at Bar Baratillo, close to the bull ring. Inside, it looked great with bulls on the walls. Then, we went to Bar Casa Morales. It felt really Spanish and became my favorite. Next, we visited Bodegas Diaz Salazar. They had a long bar where we could eat and drink easily. Lastly, we went to Bodeguita Reyes Antonio Romero. It was crowded and famous. All these places were different, and we liked them for their own special charm.

 

Eurostars Guadalquivir is a save choice in Sevilla. 

Our pick, Eurostars Guadalquivir Hotel, was spot on. All the highlights of the city in walking distance and many food possibilities around the corner.  Sarah is a fan of this chain for solid reasons: excellent breakfast, clean rooms, and consistent quality. With a strong presence across Spain’s major cities, it offers comfort and value. Plus, the prices are good. Our stay was a seamless blend of comfort and convenience, thanks to Eurostars Guadalquivir’s reliable standards.

Sevilla is the place to be in Spring and autumn. 

July and August in Sevilla can get really hot, sometimes even above 40 degrees. We found out firsthand. To be safe, it might be better to pick a different time for your trip to this amazing city. There’s so much to see and do, and it could be more enjoyable with cooler weather. But if you do go in August like us, make sure to drink lots of water to stay hydrated!

From Corfu to Ithaca, a Dream Journey!

An Exciting Journey from Corfu to Ithaca Brought Me to a Charming Cottage with Stunning Views, although Reality Was Slightly Less Perfect. But Every Second of the Journey Was Worth It. Join Me on This Incredible Adventure.

The waters around the Ionian Islands are enchanting with their sparkling blue color and crystal clarity. 

After discovering my dream house with a breathtaking view, albeit in need of renovation, on the Greek real estate website, my curiosity was piqued. I wanted to learn more about this island and this house. The next day, filled with excitement, I boarded the boat that sails along all the Ionian Islands from Corfu to Zakynthos and back, with three free days ahead, fitting perfectly into my schedule. This promised to be an unforgettable journey, where I could combine my dream house with exploring the beautiful Ionian archipelago. Even though my dream house turned out to be more of a ruin, the adventure of the boat trip took me along the most enchanting spots I have ever seen.

A Route Along Stunning Greek Islands.

This journey is an enchanting adventure that takes you along the beautiful Ionian islands. Starting early in the morning (6:00 AM) from Corfu, the journey begins with a promise of unspoiled beauty and tranquility. As the boat navigates through the azure waters, you’ll be captivated by the breathtaking views of the islands you encounter along the way.

Along the route, the boat makes stops at some of the most enchanting islands in the region. Lefkada, Paxos, and Meganisi are just a few of the gems you’ll come across. Each stop offers the opportunity to enjoy the idyllic harbors and friendly people who welcome the boat.

After a journey of about 9 hours, you finally arrive at Ithaca (3:00 PM), a paradise-like island where time seems to stand still. Here, you’ll find stunning beaches and an atmosphere of total calm and serenity. If you’re looking for a relaxing vacation far from the crowds, then Ithaca is truly the perfect destination.

Ithaca, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful islands in the Ionian Sea. It’s a place steeped in mythology and natural beauty. This picturesque island, which was the home of the legendary hero Odysseus, is an oasis of peace and serenity.

To reach Ithaca, you can take a boat trip from nearby islands like Kefalonia or Lefkada, or as I did, all the way from Corfu. As you sail across the glistening waters, surrounded by the enchanting blue of the sea, the journey is amazing as you navigate between the islands.

Upon arrival on Ithaca, you’re greeted by dramatic cliffs, pine-covered hills, and picturesque coves. The island possesses a rugged charm that appeals to both adventurers and nature enthusiasts. Explore the breathtaking hiking trails that lead to secluded beaches, where you can enjoy crystal-clear water and a sense of total escape.

The picturesque town of Vathy is Ithaca’s capital and a place you must not miss. Stroll through the narrow cobblestone streets, admire the colorful houses, and savor delicious local dishes in traditional taverns.

On the island, there happened to be a folk festival taking place, where people were dancing and celebrating in beautiful traditional attire. I felt fortunate to witness this special event.

I am genuinely thrilled that I embarked on this unforgettable boat journey and discovered the beautiful island of Ithaca. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking the authentic beauty of Greece.
