My trip to Santorini was like a wild ride filled with fun and a little bit of mischief.I had spent six months on Zakynthos, then went to Corfu for ten days. After that, I visited Athens for five days before taking a flight to Crete. I was island-hopping in Greece, and my next exciting stop was the stunning Santorini.

Let’s see what ‘the Island’ has to offer.

I arrived by ferry, a quick two-hour journey from Crete, and was instantly captivated by the stunning view of the island. With no plans, I hopped on a bus to dive into the adventure headfirst. I managed to find a simple room for my two nights through booking in the capital of the Island Fira, and then set off to explore the city.

My wanderings led me to the V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar. The owner who also owned the hotel below this lounge(Panaroma suites), a UK native with a deep connection to Greece, was incredibly welcoming (Greek dad, UK mother). Over a few beers, we chatted about life, the island, and my travels. Despite my tight budget, he kindly offered me a deal to stay in the master suite for one night – a birthday treat on the 25 of October. I couldn’t refuse! It was a room with a view that was out of this world, it had a Jacuzzi overlooking the Caldera and normally you see this only on Instagram pages, now I am experiencing it and I like it;). I will come back in 2 to use to amazing offer.

In Oia drones are not allowed.

On the second day, I decided to visit Oia, a beautiful place in Santorini known for its amazing sunsets and charming buildings. There were clear signs everywhere saying “No Drone Flying,” but I couldn’t resist the urge. I sent my drone up into the sky to get a cool view of Oia from above. Looking back, I know it wasn’t the best choice, but I really wanted to see Oia from a different angle.

I could tell that some of the local people were watching me, but they didn’t say anything.

It was different from the busy summers they were used to. This year, the island was much quieter, and the locals seemed to be enjoying the peace and calmness.My drone could not ruin there mood, this was defiantly different with a local guy in Tenerife in 2022 but that is a whole other story.

Exploring the Other Side of Santorini: Kamari, Perissa, and the Majestic Red Beach

I had already spent two amazing days walking around Oia and Fira. Now, it was time to see what else Santorini had to offer. I decided to go to Kamari, Perissa, and the famous Red Beach.

Kamari – A Big Climb

In Kamari, I wanted to see the city from high up, so I went on a hike. The path was steep and a bit hard. I’m not great with heights and had to count till 10 a few times. But when I got to the top, wow! The view was worth it. I could see the whole city and the sea. It was so beautiful and made me feel really happy.

The Red Beach – So Different

Next, I went to the Red Beach. The way to get there was a bit rocky, but when I saw the beach, I was amazed. The red rocks and the blue sea looked so strange and wonderful, like a picture from a storybook. It was a really special place, different from any beach I’d seen before.

Perissa – A Beach with Lots of Bars

Then I went to Perissa. This place is famous for its beach bars. There are about 40 of them, one after the other. I was there when the holiday season was over, so it was quiet. But I could imagine that in the summer, it’s full of people having fun, dancing, and enjoying the sun. It must be like a big beach party!

This part of my trip showed me that Santorini has so many different things to see and do. It’s not just the famous spots like Oia and Fira. Whether you like quiet nature walks, cool beaches, or fun parties, there’s something for everyone.

Party for my 30th birthday.

Back to my amazing offer a got from the owner of Panaroma suites. Two nights in a cozy double room and one night in a fantastic master villa, all thanks to my new friend, the bar/hotel owner. It was such a generous gesture.

On the 25th of October, I decided to throw a small party in the villa’s jacuzzi with some of the friends I had made on the island. We were having a great time, and our laughter and excitement got a little too loud. Eventually, a hotel staff member had to come and ask us to quiet down.

Looking back, I wish I had been more considerate, especially after the kindness I had received. It wasn’t my last night on the island, but it was a lesson in appreciating the generosity of others and being mindful of the peace and quiet of the surroundings.

In memomarium: The summer of 2020.

Despite the challenges of the summer of 2020 due to COVID-19, I had a chance to visit Greece. And what made it even more special was reuniting with my love, Sarah, on the lovely island of Crete. It truly became the most amazing summer for me, filled with love, adventure, and unforgettable moments.

For six months, I had the privilege of working on the enchanting island of Corfu, where I had the opportunity to explore all its beautiful spots. From the moment I set foot on the island, I was captivated by the beauty and charm it possesses.

Impressive capital, Kerkyra

One of the best parts of my stay was Corfu’s capital, Kerkyra. The city is bursting with history and culture. It has narrow streets, Venetian forts, and beautiful old houses. I loved wandering around the old town, checking out the lively squares, and finding local craft shops and cozy taverns.

My 3 tips for things to do when you’re in Kerkyra.

ste local delights at the old market: Head to Kerkyra’s old market and try out some yummy local foods. Find fresh goods, traditional cheeses, olive oil, honey, herbs, and more. Dive into Corfu’s flavors and enjoy a real foodie treat.
Visit the Palace of St. Michael and St. George: Check out this historic palace right in the heart of Kerkyra. Wander through its grand rooms, enjoy its lush gardens, and catch an awesome view of the city and sea from the lookout.
Discover the historic fort: Make sure to visit the huge fort that stands out in Kerkyra’s skyline. Known as the Old Venetian Fort or the New Fort, it’s a cool way to learn about the island’s military past.

Stunning beaches and hidden coves.

But what really won my heart were the beaches. Corfu is packed with amazing beaches and hidden spots that just call out for some chill time and fun. From the golden sands of Paleokastritsa to the clear blue waters of Agios Gordios and the picture-perfect views at Canal d’Amour, every beach was its own kind of awesome.

I feel privileged to have spent six months on this beautiful island. Corfu stole my heart with its rich history, stunning beaches, and welcoming locals. It’s a place where you can immerse yourself in beauty and enjoy an unforgettable Mediterranean experience.

Kerkyra, the capital of Corfu, is a picturesque town steeped in history and charm. With its Venetian influences, cobblestone streets, and stunning architecture, Kerkyra offers an enchanting blend of cultural heritage and Mediterranean beauty.

Restaurants on Corfu.

When I think about my personal dining experiences in Corfu, a few restaurants stand out. In the charming old town of Corfu, I fell in love with a place called Bougainvillea. They served the juiciest steak I’ve ever had. The delicious dishes, combined with the cozy vibe, made eating there unforgettable. In the cute village of Ipsos, I stumbled upon ‘ALS’, known for having the island’s best Moussaka. This seaside restaurant serves up classic Greek dishes. Their Moussaka, with layers of soft eggplant, spiced meat, and creamy sauce, was pure joy in every bite.

While it might not be everyone’s first pick, I found a spot for my love of Indian food in Corfu at The Tandoori Bites. It’s located in Kerkyra near the harbor to Albania. Even if the spot itself isn’t that dreamy, I’d often take my food to a beautiful part of the city. There, I’d savor the tasty dishes with a great view.

Paleis van de grootmeesters op Rhodos

Het paleis van de grootmeesters is een van de trekpleisters in het oude gedeelte van rhodos-stad. Het heeft twee eeuwen gediend als hoofdkantoor van de johannieter-orde.

Rhodos-stad – Struinend door het oude gedeelte van rhodos-stad kom je langs vele historische gebouwen uit verschillende belangrijke periodes uit de geschiedenis van het eiland. Je ziet gotische architectuur in het straatbeeld, de ottomanen hebben ook een groot aandeel in de hedendaagse uitstraling van Rhodos. De johanniet-orde heeft een belangrijke rol gespeeld in de geschiedenis van dit paleis. De ridders van de orde zijn uiteindelijk door de Ottomanen verjaagd naar Malta en daar hebben ze ‘de Orde van Malta’ opgericht.

Het paleis is gebouwd in de 7e eeuw door het Byzantijkse rijk ook wel het oost-romeinse rijk genoemd. In de 13 eeuw kreeg het paleis een nieuwe functie. Nadat de Orde van de Tempeliers was opgeheven in 1312, werden veel aanhangers en bezittingen opgenomen door de Johannieter-orde en zei hebben dit paleis en rhodos als uitbalbasis gedoopt. Dit heeft meer dan twee eeuwen stand gehouden tot de Ottomanen in 1522 het eiland veroveren en het paleis als fort en gevangenis dienst kreeg. Momenteel word de periode van de johanniet-orde als belangrijkste periode gezien uit de geschiedenis van dit paleis.

Een bezoek aan het paleis van de grootmeesters in Rhodos?

Wanneer je een vakantie hebt gepland naar Rhodos is een bezoek aan de oude stad een aanrader. De oude stad heeft zo veel te bieden. Een van deze highlight is het paleis. Het paleis is rijk aan geschiedis, het heeft een italiaanse heerser gehad, ottomaanse heerser, romeinse heerser en zoals momenteel een Griekse overheerser wie het omgedoopt hebben tot een schitterend museum. In 1988 heeft het paleis zoals de gehele oude stad van Rhodos een plekje gekregen op de werelderfgoedlijst. Het Paleis is erg goed onderhouden en je kunt de binnenkant ook bezichtigen.

Kalithea en Faliraki op Rhodos

Kalithea en Faliraki zijn twee toeristische bestemmingen op het eiland Rhodos. Faliraki heeft vele hotels en een gezellig centrum met vele bars en restaurants. Kalithea is een dorpje iets boven Faliraki wat niet veel te bieden heeft, wat kalithea bijzonder maakt zijn de kalithea springs. Vroeger was het een waar kuuroord hedendaags is het een plek waar je het oude kuuroord kunt bewonderen en waar je aan een baai een drankje of een ligbedje kunt nemen.

Faliraki – Een van Rhodos zijn vakantiebestemming waar jaarlijks tussen de 150.00 en 250.000 bezoekers komen. Het is erg populair bij Engelsen en in de hoofdseizoen zijn hier de feesten waar jongeren de barstreet induiken. Het is erg centraal gelegen tussen Lindos en Rhodos-stad en in de nabijheid vind je vele bezienswaardigheden zoals de vlindervallei, de 7 springs en Kalithea. Aan de kant van Faliraki steekt de wind minder vaak op dan aan de kant van Ixia waardoor deze bestemming in het voor en naseizoen ook een echte aanrader is. Je vind hier ook mooie zandstranden zoals Tsambika Beach.

Kalithea zijn de thermen dichtbij Faliraki. Er bevonden zich geneeskrachtige bronnen en daardoor kreeg dit een speciaal plekje onder de lokale bevolking. Het heeft jaren als kuuroord gediend tot het in verval raakte. Enkele jaren geleden hebben ze het volledig gerenoveerd en momenteel zijn de gebouwen te bewonderen hoe ze vroeger dienst uitmaakte tijdens de periode dat het een kuuroord is geweest. Ook zijn er scenes opgenomen voor films zoals ‘Zorba de Griek’. Je kunt hier genieten van een hapje en drankje en ook zijn er ligbedjes waardoor jij hier een middagje heerlijk kunt genieten. Helaas niet meer zonder Massages maar dit mag de pret niet drukken.

Waterhopper Rhodos: Altijd al eens willen duiken en kom je naar Rhodos op vakantie? Het bedrijf vaart dagelijks uit vanaf de haven in Rhodos-stad om bij de heldere baaien van Kalithea een mooie duik te nemen.

Wat is er te doen rondom Kalithea en Faliraki?

Er zijn in de gebied vele mogelijkheden. Falirake beach is een van de mooiste stranden van Rhodos met tal van watersportmogelijkheden. Ook kun je een bezoek brengen aan de ‘The Valley of the Butterflies’ wat op 30 minuten afstand in het binnenland ligt. De ‘Seven Springs’ liggen op 20 minten afstand en vele mooi stranden zoals Tsambika Beach en de Anthony Quinn baai zijn hier op nog geen 30 minuten te vinden.

Van Perissa tot Kamari: Verken de beste stranden van Santorini

Het Rode Strand (Red Beach) is een uniek strand gelegen aan de zuidkust van Santorini en is bekend om zijn rode kliffen en helderblauwe water. Het is een van de meest gefotografeerde stranden van het eiland. Het strand is echter niet erg groot en kan in het hoogseizoen behoorlijk druk zijn.

Het Zwarte Strand (Black Beach) is een ander populair strand op Santorini, gelegen aan de zuidoostelijke kust. Het is een vulkanisch strand met zwart zand en helderblauw water. Het strand heeft veel voorzieningen, zoals restaurants, strandbars en watersportactiviteiten.
